Deschutes Rim Health Clinic Providers
Sharon D. DeHart, PA-C (Physician Assistant-Certified)
Sharon is our full-time healthcare provider and returned to Central Oregon from a primary care practice in Lebanon Oregon. She brings with her almost three decades of experience in emergency medicine prior to becoming a physician assistant, a dedication to and experience in providing healthcare to the underinsured, and personifies the ‘ole country doc’ theory of medicine. She uses the years of experience in other fields besides medicine to her advantage now in caring for people of all ages, through all aspects of their life. She and her husband, Gary, who has family in the Hood River area, and four-legged child Shadow, have recently purchased a home in the Wamic/Pine Hollow area, “as we plan to live out the rest of our lives here.” We are committed to our friends and neighbors!
Stephen A. McLennon, MD, our Medical Director and Supervising Physician
Dr. McLennon comes to see patients every two weeks, in addition to working in The Dalles in Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine. He is also the Medical Director for Mid-Columbia Medical Center’s Center for Mind and Body, teaches stress relaxation classes, and performs and leads community drumming sessions, believing drumming improves moods, immune function, physical movement and decreases burnout and stress.
Nina van Es, NP, our 3/4 time Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, started working as a nurse in the Portland area back in the 1980’s, mostly in cancer care of what kind or another. She has been involved in multiple heart disease, cancer and hospice studies over the years. She enrolled at OHSU’s Nurse Practitioner Program in 1999, graduated in 2001 with a Masters of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner. She has worked at Celilo Cancer Center in The Dalles since graduation, and transitioned to Providence working in Hospice and their Palliative Care Program for two years prior to joining Deschutes Rim Clinic. She and her husband continue to live on the Washington side of the river, and she commutes to Maupin once a week to work with us for three fun-filled days. Her license does not allow her to see anyone under the age of 18, so Sharon is usually available as needed on those three days.
Steven Woolpert, Licensed Professional Counselor, will work with us as a Behavioral Health Consultant. He is experienced in many forms of counseling, including Family health, depression and grieving, and behavior changes such as smoking cessation and weight loss. He has also participated in addiction and substance abuse counseling. He is working with many of our clients towards a positive life change for themselves.
Jan van Es, MAcOM, LAc., has been in practice for over 10 years. He graduated from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 2004 and has worked in the Mind-Body Medicine program at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in the Columbia Gorge since 2006. In this capacity he has treated a wide range of chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, for 5 years he was staff acupuncturist at Celilo Cancer Center assisting in the management of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as providing supportive therapy for patients in post-treatment recovery. Jan utilizes several styles of acupuncture in his practice depending on the needs of the patient, ranging from Western anatomically based trigger point therapies, to Traditional Chinese Medicine to less invasive styles. He has treated patients in a variety of environments, from hospital-based in-patient settings to traditional individualized treatments. Jan has spent a number of years studying martial arts, Tai Chi and Qi Gong. He is a certified instructor of 1000 Hands of Buddha Qi Gong. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from 2008-2010 and was Vice President from 2009-2010. In his free time Jan enjoys spending time outdoors and is an avid hiker. He has hiked the Timberline Trail several times, as well as the John Muir Trail from Mt. Whitney to Yosemite. He is currently training for a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail this summer.
Lee Balentine, DMD, rents space for his private Dental practice in the Deschutes Rim Clinic building.
Dr. Balentine graduated from the University of Arizona in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science. He then attended the University of Oregon Dental School in Portland, graduating in 1975. He spent the next three years with the Navy before returning to Portland to practice. After spending eight years with the Willamette Dental Group he decided it was time to spread his wings and go out on his own. He landed in Maupin, Oregon. Dr. Balentine moved to this area because he enjoys fishing and hunting, but his most recent love is golf.
Dr. Balentine is involved in our local community. He is part of the Fire Department, the South Wasco County Ambulance, the Lions Club, the board for Canyon Rim Manor and the Chamber of Commerce. He is also a Community Member at Large for the White River Health District Board of Directors, the parent board for the Deschutes Rim Health Clinic.
Dr. Balentine has been married to his wife Sharon, a school teacher in Maupin, for 35 years and has four children and one golden lab.
With the move to larger quarters within the Deschutes Rim Health Clinic building, Dr. Balentine has been able to add 2 new staff members: a dental assistant and a hygienist to his qualified staff.
